ANDALUCIA

Dear reader

It is the time of the year when I think of holidays. I'm still at University and I am getting exhausted and fed up with studying. What I miss most is the freedom to travel whenever I want. Unfortunately, my studies and my assignments won't allow me to travel anywhere until I finish my course, which is at the end of April (yippeeee!).

But this won't stop me thinking of a nice and warm place with lots of culture and sandy beaches to relax.

This year, I am planning a trip to Spain. In fact - I won a 7 day holiday to Spain, including flights and accommodation. How good is that???

I have the choice to go to Tenerife or to Andalucia. Years ago, I went to Almunecar in Andalucia (twice), to learn Spanish for two weeks. Almunecar is a beautiful little village by the sea, with lovely restaurants and small shops, approx. 2 hours north of Malaga.

Although I have already been to Andalucia, I am still considering going again as this time, I am planning to visit places like Cordoba, Seville, Granada and perhaps Tarifa (depending on how much time we have).

Has anyone been to any of these places? Or do you live in one of these villages/cities/towns?
Could you perhaps recommend some nice restaurants and must-see sights?

The best time for me to travel would be sometime in the second half of May 2011.

I look forward to your feedback, tips and other comments.

Thanks a lot!

The seaside town of Nerja is only 20 minutes drive from Almunecar and is famous for its subterranean caves, where they hold concerts in July. One of the boys that discovered the caves, "Ayo", has a chiringuito beach restaurant that is famous for its paellas, however, they are not as good as they used to be. Best character bar in Nerja is Bar Bodega Los Bilbainos that serve locally produced sweet wine and is one of the last places that continue to serve free tapas.
Sub aqua diving in the national park waters is terrific.
If you want to connect with nature then there is the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in northern Spain that I completed last year in 40 days - I am writing a guide book as the North route is not well known.

South Tenerife revolves around tourism - I recommend North Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz and book online in advance to walk up Mount Teide as they restrict access.

Congratulations on winning a holiday - please excuse my sceptism that this will be timeshare and you will be required to attend a sales presentation.

Hi Camino

Thank you very much for your great input and tips on holidays in Spain. And I think you were right in relation to the timeshare scam. I have not attended the presentation (attending the presentation was part of the terms & conditions) as I have googled the company to find out more and they are indeed heavily involved in timeshare which put me off immediately. So, I won't be going to Spain this spring but I am planning to do that next year.

There are so many beautiful places in Spain and your tips are highly appreciated. The north of Spain sounds like the place to be so I will keep this in mind when planning my next trip to Spain.

Paulo Coelho wrote about the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in one of his books and that's definitely on my list of places to visit.

Best wishes,
Gordana
